Atascadero High School’s Wellness Center is open to all students during the school day for individual and group counseling on a scheduled and drop-in basis, and after school for family counseling and parent/care giver education. Counseling at the Wellness Center is brief, generally 6-8 sessions, focusing on destigmatizing mental health and the counseling process. Students and families learn stress management/emotional regulation skills, relationship and communication skills, and are supported as they identify strengths and build resilience. Groups are formed based on student needs and interests. Kamela Proulx, licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), coordinates the Wellness Center services, and supervises the counseling provided by MFT trainees and interns. Additional opportunities provided by the Wellness Center include weekly GSA (Gay/Straight Alliance) club meetings, the “Close to Home” program through RISE, and special speakers and events.
