GATE AHS is also working on establishing a steering committee to help guide the support of social and emotional needs of our GATE students. This will include increasing teacher skills and providing group, seminar, or workshop activities in such areas as time management, coping with setbacks, coping with change, etc. If you are interested in helping or have ideas contact Ms. Williams at the above email address or call 462-4434 ext. 1420 and leave a voice message. Advanced Placement We offer English 4, Statistics, Calculus, Political Science, US history, Chemistry and biology, Next year we will be adding Environmental Science and World History. Honors, Academic Electives, and Advanced Courses There is an honors option in English. Academic Electives classes are Psychology, Forensics and Astronomy and Geology offered every other year. Advanced courses are available in the Arts. Even though, there are no advanced courses in computers; we do offer ROP courses to further students' knowledge in that field. California Scholarship Federation CSF is a club for students who have good grades in certain classes. In order to be a life member and wear the gold stole at graduation, students must be a member for four of the last six semesters, one in their senior year. Students must apply every semester; applications are available now in Room C-2. They are due Friday, September 27. NO late applications will be accepted. The club meets the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at lunch in Room C-2. Our first meeting will be a week from tomorrow. Academic Letter Juniors and seniors are eligible for an academic letter by earning a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or greater based on a weighed scale and have passed all their classes for the semester being considered. The first award is either an Academic Letter or an emblem (if they already have a letter), then a lamp of knowledge pin, and the third award is a chevron. Students will be notified; they need not apply. The award ceremonies are held in the fall and spring. Academic Decathlon The academic decathlon is a countywide competition held in February. As the name implies there are 10 categories in the competition Math - emphasis on algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Economics - economic basics and the economics of Energy. Art - pieces be Constable, turner, Whistler and Monet to name a few. Language and Literature - along with some poetry, our novel is Far From the Madding Crowd. Music - focusing on the Romantic Era with pieces by Beethoven, Chopin, and Wagner, Brahms, and Strauss. Social Science - emphasis on technology throughout the ages Interview Speech - 4 min prepared and 2 min impromptu Essay Super Quiz - The Blue Planet - beneath the surface. California Math League California Math League is a six question, 30 minute contest, which takes place once a month throughout the school year. Questions consist of concepts and skills from Geometry through Trigonometry. Sign up with you math teacher or stop by room C-2. This year we are trying something new and would appreciate your feedback. A GATE column will be included in the school newsletter, the Little Hound, which will be published at least once a quarter. It will keep you apprised of items such as CSF officers, club activities, award recipients, California Math League results, and of the special projects that receive GATE funding.
