Agriculture and Natural Resources Sector

The Agriculture and Natural Resources sector is designed to provide a foundation in agriculture for all agriculture students in California. Students engage in an instructional program that integrates academic and technical preparation and focuses on career awareness, career exploration, and skill preparation in seven pathways. The pathways emphasize real-world, occupationally relevant experiences of significant scope and depth in Agricultural Business, Agricultural Mechanics, Agriscience, Animal Science, Forestry and Natural Resources, Ornamental Horticulture, and Plant and Soil Science. Integral components of classroom and laboratory instruction, supervised agricultural experience projects, and leadership and interpersonal skills development prepare students for continued training, advanced educational opportunities, or entry to a career.

Agricultrural Mechanics

The Agricultural Mechanics pathway prepares students for careers related to the construction, operation, and maintenance of equipment used by the agriculture industry. Basic agricultural mechanics skills and safety, standards B1.0 through B8.0, cover woodworking, electrical systems, plumbing, cold metal work, concrete, and welding technology. Advanced topics, standards B9.0 through B12.0, deal with metal fabrication, small engines, agriculture power and technology, and agriculture construction.

Courses

Agricultural Construction
Students will be able to expand on the skills developed in prerequisite classes. These students will be able to select a specific area of interest, which will enable them to construct projects of any size. FFA material will be covered and each student will have a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). Projects are required. This is a two-period class. Students are required to participate in 6 FFA activities per semester.

Agricultural Welding
Welding will provide an understanding of the principles of electric arc welding, oxygen-acetylene welding and cutting, selection of welding equipment and plasma cam. Students will be exposed to career opportunities in welding and development skills necessary to advance in the agricultural mechanics program. FFA material will be covered, and each student will have a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). This class is articulated with Cuesta College and West Hills College, which means that a student can receive credit at Cuesta or West Hills through an examination process. Students are required to participate in 6 FFA activities per semester.
Basic Agricultural Mechanics
This course is designed to provide students with knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to succeed in advanced course work in agricultural mechanics. Course covers use of hand tools and power tools, woodworking, materials and fasteners, electricity, concrete work, rope work, basic welding skills, and small project construction. FFA material will be covered and each student will have a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). Students are required to participate in 6 FFA activities per semester.
